Queensland Musical Theatre (QMT) was founded by Brian and Denise Cahill in June 1984 with the vision of creating outstanding musical theatre while enriching the cultural life of people of all ages across Brisbane. Its inaugural production, My Fair Lady, was staged in November of that year, establishing a tradition of excellence that continues today.
As Co-Founder and Artistic Director for more than 25 years, Denise Cahill was instrumental in shaping the company's artistic identity and reputation. Under her leadership, QMT became renowned for producing high-quality musicals, Gilbert and Sullivan productions, operetta, and concerts. Her commitment to artistic excellence, strong production values laid the foundations for the company to become one of Queensland's most respected community musical theatre organisations.
Following the success of its early years, QMT's activities quickly expanded beyond Brisbane's northern suburbs to audiences and performers throughout Brisbane and South-East Queensland. Since its inception, the company has continued to present major musical productions each year, remaining committed to providing opportunities for performers of all ages while delivering memorable theatrical experiences for audiences.
Our current Artistic Director, Deian Ping, has led Queensland Musical Theatre since 2010, continuing the company's tradition of artistic excellence while guiding it to new heights. Most recently, QMT's acclaimed productions of My Fair Lady (2024), Mary Poppins (2024), and Hairspray (2025) have showcased the company's commitment to exceptional musical theatre.
Beyond its celebrated musicals, QMT has a proud history of presenting Gilbert and Sullivan works, operetta, and concert performances. The company has also earned particular acclaim for its large-scale sung-through musicals, including Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Miss Saigon, and Cats, demonstrating its ability to deliver ambitious productions with outstanding artistic quality.
