The impoverished Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro come to Venice in search of the heir to the throne of Barataria, betrothed to their daughter and inconveniently mislaid at birth due to a revolution.  The most likely candidates are two handsome gondolieri who have just married their sweethearts! To add to the complications their high-born daughter is in love with their humble attendant. It takes the help of a Grand Inquisitor and a nursemaid to unravel the knots in this particularly tortuous tale from the great Gilbert & Sullivan collaboration.
